You start off with 5 lives and you can lose them by falling into pits or by getting attacked by all sorts of enemies. Your only method of defense or attack is picking things from the ground with the A key. After you pick up an item, you can throw it by pressing the A key again. Your character can do a super jump, but you will have to hold the down key for 3 seconds and press the up key as soon as you start flashing. Super Mafia Land contains secret levels in which you can collect fruits, but some of them are quite hard to find.
